If your refrigerator stopped dispensing ice and water you have come to the right place. There are several reasons this can happen.

The simplest thing to check and remedy is a plugged filter. All refrigerators that have a filter, send the water through it before it goes anywhere else. This way the water for ice and drinking is filtered so it can taste its best. If the filter stops allowing water to flow through it, you won’t have any water for ice or drinking. Refrigerator water filters are made to remove impurities to ensure the best taste in your dispensed ice and water. They are not designed to handle sediment, but will remove it from the water if it’s there. However, this will quickly plug the filter and stop the flow of water. Even if you changed your water filter in the last 6 months it’s a good idea to go ahead and change it again if your refrigerator suddenly stops making ice and dispensing water. If this happens frequently it would be prudent to consult a plumber and consider a whole house filtration system. While generic or off-brand water filters are often tempting due to their cheaper cost, we recommend sticking with the brand-name to avoid poor function or even damage to the refrigerator.

Another thing that’s easy to check is if your refrigerator is indeed getting good water pressure. Most are connected to a valve in the wall behind the refrigerator. Ensure this valve is turned on. To make sure there is good water flow to your refrigerator follow these steps.

  1. Turn the valve off
  2. Use two wrenches to disconnect the hose from the refrigerator
  3. Place the disconnected hose from the wall into a container to catch the water
  4. Turn the valve back on briefly and observe the flow of water
If you have a good flow of water there, you have determined that the problem lies somewhere in the refrigerator.
At this point you have eliminated the simple common problems that most homeowners could fix. It could be a faulty water valve or frozen water line in your refrigerator causing the malfunction. Call us for fast, expert service so your refrigerator can start providing you with fresh ice and water again.
