If your top-load washer won’t start a cycle or seems to run endlessly with the drain pump running non-stop, you’re not alone. This issue is showing up frequently on certain Whirlpool-made washers — including models sold under the Whirlpool, Maytag, and Amana brand names.
What’s Happening
Customers often describe the problem as:
The washer won’t run a cycle.
The drain pump runs continuously, sometimes for 10 minutes or more.
Holding the Start button for 6–10 seconds or unplugging it will sometimes reset the machine, but the issue usually comes back.
This happens because of a faulty water-level pressure sensor built into the washer’s control board. If the sensor doesn’t read correctly, the washer assumes it may be flooding and automatically runs the drain pump as a safety measure.
The repair requires replacing the entire control board.
Extended Coverage from Whirlpool
This issue is so widespread that Whirlpool has issued a Service Pointer (W11766193 Rev D), covering many models in specific serial number ranges.

Here’s the key part:
Even if your washer is out of its 1-year warranty, Whirlpool will likely still cover the repair under this program.
To receive a no-cost repair, you must contact Whirlpool directly. They will send their own authorized technician to perform the service.
What Dependable Appliance Repair Can Do
At Dependable Appliance Repair, we are not contracted with Whirlpool for warranty service. That means if you hire us to repair this problem, it will be an out-of-pocket expense.
That said, we are happy to:
Confirm the diagnosis for you.
Perform the repair if you prefer local service outside of Whirlpool’s network.
Help if Whirlpool’s coverage does not apply, or if you want the washer fixed faster than Whirlpool can schedule.

How to Enter Diagnostic Mode (Optional)
For those comfortable trying it, you can access stored error codes using the washer’s Service Diagnostic Test Mode.
Steps to enter diagnostics:
Start with the washer in standby mode (plugged in, all lights off).
Rotate the cycle selector knob in the following sequence within 6 seconds:
Right – Right – Right – Left – Right
If successful, all lights will flash.
Turn the knob 1 click clockwise (far-right light on), then press Start.
Error codes will display using the lights in binary (on/off pattern).
Keep turning the knob clockwise to scroll through additional stored errors.
📌 Tip: Record the flashing lights on your phone and share the video with Whirlpool or with us.
What the F3E1 Error Looks Like
If your washer has the F3E1 pressure sensor error, the lights will show this pattern:
Fault Number (F3) → Fill + Spin + Done lights on
Error Number (E1) → Done light on
Next Steps for You
If your washer won’t quit running:
Check your model/serial number against Whirlpool’s service pointer. The model/serial number for your washer will be on a sticker underneath the lid. It will have a barcode on it.
Call Whirlpool first — tell them the drain pump is running continuously and you believe it’s the pressure sensor issue covered under the pointer.
If Whirlpool coverage does not apply or if you prefer a local repair, contact Dependable Appliance Repair.
Final Word
We know it’s frustrating when your washer seems stuck running forever. In this case, Whirlpool has recognized the issue and is often willing to fix it at no cost — but you’ll need to go through their process to get that benefit.
If coverage doesn’t apply, or if you simply prefer to work with a local company, we’re here to help.
